NOTES FROM THE FARM
EARTH DAY was celebrated by planting a row of gooseberry brambles with youth group from Beth Jacob's Congregation. A bunch of thanks to Terry Honan & the young earth stewards!
April was hallmarked with extensive & intensive plantings in field & coldframes: everbearing strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, gooseberries & veggies.
Yet to be planted are summer strawberries, raspberries, fruit trees (apples, pears, cherries, plums & apricots) & summer veggies.
IT'S PLANTING TIME!
The long winter behind, celebrate the month of May by adding edibles & ornamentals to your garden: Roses, bare-root fruit trees, blueberries, brambles, strawberries, raspberries, vegetables & ornamentals are lined up. New this season: veggies & herbs grown in peat pots - just stick'em in your garden. Large tomato, eggplant & bell pepper plants will fruit up to six weeks earlier than plugs. ALL VEGGIES ARE ORGANIC! Bagged composted turkey manure & worm castings are available as well.
ROSE TIPS
More gardeners are discovering the merits in growing hardy roses as perennials.
Early planting advantages include: improved hardiness & longer bloom time. Roses should have been pruned & fed by now with Bob's Custom mix, to ensure season-long beauty.
Japanese beetles are planning another assault this summer, so be ready to install traps & lures away from your flowering & fruiting plants.
NANCY'S HYPER TUFFAS
Nancy's love for plants & creativity inspired her to explore the art of growing succulents & herbs in hyper tuffa containers, which can be used both indoor & out. Her creations are displayed inside the greenhouse nearest to the store, along with patio containers, baskets & bedding plants. Please check those out!
