Thanks to this film I have one of the fondest memories of this film in my life. I remember that the first time I saw it was in my High School days, in those years I would stay up all night on weekends and one Friday I found it by chance changing the channels and by some strange nostalgic feeling I stayed watching it until the end. I think it is thanks to this film and others that I love the world of cinema because it always has and will always have something to offer to all of us. Believe me: this power exists.
The very commonly strident and arguable, overrated (sometimes) Alan Parker, takes the risk to adapt with…

I'm going to class this one as a first watch because I'm not actually sure I've ever seen it all the way through before.
Alan Parker brings Frank McCourt's bestselling, Pulitzer-Prize winning memoir to the screen with an excellent cast and production values. The result is a polished, engrossing affair, though it is an adaptation that perhaps lacks some of the nuance that can be found in the source material, and some characters never truly feel properly introduced to us.
I know this has a reputation for being 'poverty porn' and wallowing in misery, but it's unfair to dwell on this when you consider how much of the tears you may shed actually stem from laughter. As such Angela's Ashes is a bittersweet experience, and a beautiful, emotive film.

Review by The Ron ★★★½ 8
Angela's Ashes, based on Frank McCourt's Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir, is a depressing film full of heartbreak and pain. Set in Depression-era Ireland in the impoverished town of Limerick, it's the story of Frank's extremely difficult childhood and his quest to find a better life in America. Most of us go through some shit in our lives, but Frank had to endure a hell of a lot more than most people. As depressing as the rain soaked setting is, there's always hope in Frank's eyes, and the overall story is rather inspiring.
Stories like this always make me thankful for modern luxuries. With all the technology we're spoiled with today, we easily forget how hard it was in different times. We…

I haven’t seen this in years. I think everyone in Ireland has seen this film. A well written and even better cast film, with a lot of heart. The performances are great across the board. A sombre story, constant high and lows, as well as 2 hours of rain. Worth a watch.

It was, of course, a miserable childhood: the happy childhood is hardly worth your while.
an excitedly optimistic view of a bleak, self-serving world. angela's ashes manages to capture the paradox of hope for humanity when the surrounding world seems to be crumbling. maybe that's just the childlike, sanguine naïveté of its' main character frank, or maybe it's a bullish outlook towards a future full of possibilities. in the end, i couldn't tell you if this film spoke to seeing the glass half full or half empty, or maybe just to having a glass at all.

Review by ClinTarantino ★★★
Finally watched my granddads favorite film after starting it with him. This story was a little bit similar to his families story which is the reason this film is that personal to him.
I have to say that the pacing and the enjoyment to watch this wasn’t that high but I liked the storytelling and I love childhood tales like this but even when I think Parker portrayed it good it’s a joke in compare to a film like once upon a time in America.

Three child deaths within the first 25 minutes so obviously the rest is a barrel of laughs

A film that makes you feel very grateful for how easy you have it...
But ona more serious note, great performances all around. It’s atmosphere is consistent with a fitting, well done voiceover narration at times and beautifully scored by John Williams. There are a couple of wins and PLENTY of losses, as to be expected for a melodrama set during the Depression era - not something I’d usually watch but I did - and I really liked it.
