Budget Friendly Chicken and Gravy

Chicken and gravy is the epitome of a budget-friendly meal that the whole family will enjoy.

With just a few simple ingredients, you can create a hearty and satisfying dish that will feed a crowd without breaking the bank.

Boneless, skinless chicken breasts are often reasonably priced and can be purchased in bulk for even more savings.

I’ve also made this using an inexpensive rotisserie chicken from the grocery store.

And while there’s a time to make homemade gravy with chicken drippings, for this shortcut recipe I’m using gravy packets for convenience.

But you can certainly make homemade chicken gravy from basic pantry staples like chicken broth and all purpose flour.

You also have the option to use homemade cream of chicken soup or the canned version–though I highly recommend making your own!

These ingredients are not only affordable but also versatile, making them great pantry staples to have on hand for a variety of dishes.

Pairing the chicken and gravy with inexpensive sides like creamy mashed potatoes, rice, or biscuits transforms this meal into a filling and complete dinner that won’t strain your wallet.

Plus, any leftovers can be easily reheated for a quick and economical meal the next day.

How to Make It:

(Full printable recipe card is available below)

Cook the chicken. First, you’ll combine chicken breasts and chicken broth in a deep skillet or dutch oven.

Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce heat to a simmer.

Allow the chicken breasts to cook, uncovered, for about 10-15 minutes, or until cooked through.

Shred the chicken in the pan, being careful not to splash the hot broth.

Notes and Adaptations:

  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-5 days. You may need to stir in a splash of water or broth when reheating, as the gravy tends to thicken more as it cools.
  • I prefer usinghomemade cream of chicken soupfor this recipe, because it’s a great way to add flavor. However, if you’re using canned cream of chicken soup, I recommend whisking one can of condensed soup with one can of milk for best results.
  • Feel free to use pre-cooked chicken if you have some leftover chicken on hand (I’d recommend about 4 cups of chicken). You can simply add it to the hot broth and let it warm up for a few minutes before adding the remaining ingredients.
  • I also have a recipe for Instant Pot pork chops and gravy, if you want a variation!
  • I don’t find that this recipe needs additional seasoning, but if you want to add some poultry seasoning to the gravy, feel free–I’d start with 1/4 teaspoon and add more if you think it needs it.
