Regardless of your age, you’re likely experiencing some sort of skin issue. Many adults experience troubling acne scars and hyperpigmentation that undermine their confidence. If you haven’t already considered photorejuvenation to bring your skin back to life, now is the time to do so! BroadBand Light or BBL laser treatments use light energy technology to transform your skin.
What Is BBL Laser Treatment and How Does It Work?
What does BBL laser do and who is a candidate for the treatment? As we mentioned, this is a treatment performed using alaser and is also referred to as a photofacial. It delivers light energy to the deeper skin layers which help promote cell regeneration. This is a safe and effective treatment for a host of cosmetic skin concerns.
We recommend exploring BBL for the following:
- Treats skin conditions including spider veins, rosacea, and acne.
- Minimizes the appearance of fine lines, sun damage, and wrinkles.
- Evens out skin texture and tone.
In addition to being a suitable treatment for a range of skin concerns, there are other benefits of BBL laser; it can stimulate more collagen production and ease redness through its advanced heating process.
What Is BBL Used For?
BBL is typically used on the face, arms, neck, chest, and hands, although it can technically be used on any area of the body. It works to enhance the appearance of your skin where you may have suffered from sun exposure, harmful skincare products, or pollution.
Many dermatologists use BBL laser treatments for vascular lesions, rosacea, and acne. It is also shown to reduce the appearance of large pores, wrinkles, fine lines, sun damage, dull skin, pigmented lesions such as freckles and age spots, loose or sagging skin, redness, or melasma. In terms of how often to do BBL laser, we recommend 3-6 treatments spaced a few weeks apart. From there, you can expect to seek treatment twice a year to maintain your results. To develop a treatment plan that is right for you please book a consultation.
Does BBL Laser Work?
We know what you may be thinking: does broadband light therapy work? According to a small 2019 study that looked at the effects of 5 BBL treatments every two weeks, the procedure is safe and mildly effective in reducing the appearance of facial pores. A similar 2019 study found that BBL treatments were effective in tightening the skin.
Immediately after your procedure, you will begin to notice a difference. Expect any blemishes or blood vessels to clear up within a few weeks. During the first two weeks after your first treatment, you’ll likely notice that your skin feels smoother, brighter, and more even-toned. Some patients also experience fewer fine lines.
What to Expect During and After BBL Laser Treatment
The first step is scheduling an initial BBL consultation where a dermatologist will look at your skin and pinpoint areas to target. From there, your dermatologist will be able to curate a treatment plan.
The treatments themselves usually last about 30 minutes depending on the area that you’re getting treated. Your esthetician may apply a cooling gel to decrease discomfort if needed.
BBL laser aftercare is simple. You can apply an ice pack during the first 24 hours to minimize swelling. You can also use aloe or vitamin Eproducts for a soothing effect. Make sure to avoid sun exposure for at least 7-14 days after the procedure.
How to Prepare for BBL
BBL preparation is important in yielding the results that you want. Make sure to avoid direct sunlight or tanning beds for 3-4 weeks before your session. You should also avoid using sunless tanner for 2 weeks leading up to your appointment. The week before your appointment, avoid chemical peels, waxing, or using products that contain retinol, salicylic acid, and glycolic acid.
It’s always a good idea to talk to your doctor about prescriptions that you are taking that could cause photosensitivity or extreme UV light sensitivity. In the case that you get cold sores, you might need an antiviral medication before your session or you may react and have a breakout.
BBL Laser Risks and Side Effects
Let’s talk about broadband light therapy’s side effects. You may feel redness, burning, or warmth that mimics a sunburn. Many patients report that this feeling only lasts for a few hours, but in some rare cases, it can last for a few days.
During the initial week after your first treatment, you may notice pigment coming to your skin’s surface. This is normal! So is some redness, swelling, and peeling. After your treatment, make sure to avoid:
- Exfoliants
- Topical acne treatments
- Scented skincare products
Always use lukewarm water and avoid hot or cold water when washing the treated area. Make sure to use non-irritating skincare products and avoid touching your skin as much as possible.
